Learning Objectives:
1. Define and describe the stakeholders referenced in NFPA 25
2. Locate and explain the roles and responsibilities for each stakeholder
3. Explain the characteristics and duties of the individual inspector
4. Identify the ways in which stakeholders interact to ensure the mission and
purpose of NFPA 25 is delivered
5. Discuss situations where the NFPA 25 standard is misunderstood or
misapplied such as: sprinkler testing; internal inspections; hydrant testing;
standpipe systems; hydrostatic testing of piping and fire department
connections.
6. Identify equipment and methods to address common problems found during
the inspection and testing of water-based fire protection systems.
7. Evaluate the application of automated inspection and testing and its impact
on the industry.
8. Identify occupancy classifications and minimum design criteria
9. Determine the available water supply and compare to system demands
10. Determine minimum starting flow and pressure.
11. Identify forms of pressure loss.
12. Apply the Hazen-Williams formula by changing variables (flow, roughness,
and pipe size) to improve system performance.
13. Apply hydraulic principals to balance flows and pressures at junction points
Registration includes training, lunch, and CEU certificates (8 hours) from AFSA
SPEAKER:
John August Denhardt, P.E., ET, FSFPE, CWBSP, is Vice President of Engineering and Technical Services
for AFSA. He is a Professional Engineer (P.E.) registered in the District of Columbia as well as the states
of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. He is a NICET Level III in Automatic Sprinkler System
Layout and Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems and an NFPA Certified Water-Based Systems
Professional (CWBSP). He is a member of the NFPA 13 Sprinkler Discharge Committee and is a Fellow in
the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE). Denhardt is a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
Research Foundation trustee, sits on the University of Maryland Department of Fire Protection
Engineering’s Board of Visitors, and is a member of the SFPE Board of Directors. A native of Maryland,
Denhardt holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of
Maryland in College Park.
